Voters list not uploaded on website due to security issues: ECP

ISLAMABAD : The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said that it was technology progressive organisation and has accomplished more than two dozen technological initiatives since 2020.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has refrained from uploading the voters’ list on its website or mobile apps to ensure international data security standards, individual privacy, and compliance with the Elections Act, 2017. The ECP cites global incidents of website hacking during elections, emphasizing the vulnerability of online platforms to cyber threats. The cautious approach aligns with global best practices, aiming to preserve public trust in the integrity of electoral systems. The ECP emphasizes the substantial cost required for web security to safeguard against hackers. Placing the voters’ list on websites or mobile apps is considered neither internationally recommended nor technically secure, as it poses a risk of hacking and violates Section 195 of the Elections Act, 2017. Meanwhile, Returning Officers in the capital scrutinized 51 more candidates’ nomination papers for three National Assembly seats, with decisions expected on December 30, 2023.
