SC upholds ex-military dictator Musharraf’s death sentence in treason case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the death sentence of late former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, awarded to him by the Special Court in the high treason case.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has set aside the Lahore High Court’s 2020 order declaring unconstitutional the death sentence of former military dictator Pervez Musharraf. The LHC had overturned Musharraf’s conviction for high treason, marking the first time a military chief in Pakistan was declared guilty and punished. The Supreme Court’s decision dismisses appeals challenging the LHC’s ruling, noting that Musharraf’s legal heirs couldn’t be contacted. The court observed that the LHC’s jurisdiction and the appeal were separate matters. Barrister Safdar, representing the case, highlighted delays and the lack of response from Musharraf’s family. The Supreme Court acknowledged the urgency of the high treason case and emphasized its need for a swift resolution.
