SC resumes hearing ECP’s plea against high court

The Supreme Court has resumed hearing today (Saturday) the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) petition challenging the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) decision to restore the PTI’s ‘bat’ election symbol.

The ECP will allot election symbols to political parties today.

A three-judge bench, comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa and Justices Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Musarrat Hilali, will hear the case. The proceedings will be broadcast live on the SC’s website and YouTube.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) challenged the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) decision to restore the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) electoral symbol, the ‘bat’. The PHC had deemed the ECP’s decision to revoke the symbol and reject PTI’s intra-party polls as illegal. The ECP argued that the PHC overstepped its jurisdiction. The Supreme Court withdrew the PTI’s appeal, already under consideration by the PHC. The PHC order conflicted with the ECP’s constitutional and statutory roles, leading to a legal challenge.
