Senator Dilawar pens letter to Sanjrani over lack of action on resolution seeking poll delay

Independent Senator Dilawar Khan on Monday wrote a letter to Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, saying that it was “disconcerting” that no “tangible steps” had been taken by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for delaying the February 8 general elections despite the passage of a resolution by the upper House of Parliament.

The Senate’s resolution on January 5 seeking the postponement of the general elections due to security and weather concerns has not resulted in tangible steps by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), prompting the mover, independent Senator Dilawar, to request Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani’s intervention. Dilawar emphasized the need for addressing the concerns raised in the resolution for the essence of free and fair elections. In response, the ECP wrote to the Senate, stating that delaying the polls at this stage is not advisable, highlighting arrangements made for security and a commitment to the Supreme Court. Two additional resolutions seeking a delay were submitted, citing security challenges and harsh weather conditions.
