Pakistan faced worst economic crisis in 2023, says Human Rights Watch

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan faced one of the worst economic crises in its history in 2023 with poverty, inflation and unemployment soaring, jeopardising millions of people’s rights to health, food and an adequate standard of living, according to a report by the Human Rights Watch.
The Human Rights Watch (HRW) World Report 2024 highlights concerns in Pakistan, including the negative impact of IMF austerity measures on low-income groups, vulnerability to climate change, and government repression. The report notes media intimidation, threats to civil society, and restrictions on NGOs. Widespread violence against women, low conviction rates for rape, and millions of children out of school, especially girls, are highlighted. Mental health awareness is lacking, and prisoners face mockery when seeking support. Food insecurity affects nearly 37% of the population. Despite challenges, Pakistan deepens ties with China, and the EU considers extending trade preferences. The HRW calls for bold approaches to address human rights issues in Asia.
