PM seeks detailed roadmap to boost IT exports


Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the surge in Information Technology (IT) service exports exceeding $3 billion and urged a comprehensive strategy to further elevate IT exports during a meeting to review the IT and telecom sectors. Newly appointed Minister of State for IT, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, was tasked with the portfolio. Emphasizing swift resolution of issues faced by start-ups, freelancers, and IT firms with banking, the PM stressed the need for hard work to align Pakistan’s IT sector with global standards. He pledged government support for IT export potential and youth education, skill development, and start-ups. The meeting highlighted progress on the IT package announced in June 2023, revealing a 13% increase in IT exports compared to the previous year. Notable investments in Pakistani start-ups and achievements in IT training under the Digiskills program were also noted. The PM directed efforts to attract investment, enhance IT exports, and expedite projects for youth training. Additionally, Bloomberg highlighted PM Shehbaz’s reform track record, suggesting his return increases prospects for a new IMF package. It noted the need for securing loans to address economic challenges, including maturing bonds and unlocking the final IMF tranche.
